LYNNIE VERSION

Would you like to read this article in more grown-up words, still easy to understand? Jump here.

Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m telling you about the legal requirements for an online business. That means the rules!

Lots of grown-ups are scared of this part. But once it’s explained clearly, it’s okay. Really!

Lynnie’s little note: This is just for learning. It’s not real legal advice for your business. Please ask a grown-up lawyer to check your own documents!

Lesson T4: Legal & Safety

Before you start, it’s good to know the basic rules of being online. Lynnaider explains them simply, with the most common ones first. That helps you start on the right foot and avoid traps.

Think contracts first!

Here’s a big secret. Online, a contract can happen with just one click!

When you click “Agree” or “I accept,” you’ve said yes to the rules. Sometimes you agree just by using a website or buying something. No signing needed!

The rules pages from the setup stage? Those are contracts too.

It works both ways

When you’re a customer, you say yes to the rules of the shops and apps you use. When you’re the business, your visitors and customers say yes to YOUR rules.

Is it lots of work?

Not as much as you’d think! Especially if you set things up properly at the start. Then there’s way less to worry about later.

And lots of platforms and website builders have templates and helpers built in. Still, always have your own lawyer check anything you publish as a contract.

Rule oopsies

  1. No rules pages at all. Some grown-ups think, “My business is too small!” But size doesn’t matter for most of these rules.
  2. Copying another business’s rules pages. Their business might be totally different from yours!
  3. Adding people to a newsletter without asking. Like adding everybody who downloads a freebie. Nope!

These oopsies are easy to avoid once you know about them. The next articles show you how.

Marketplaces help a lot

On a marketplace, lots of the rules are already there. Buyers say yes to the marketplace’s rules when they shop. You might still need a few shop rules, but the big responsibility sits with the platform.

That’s one reason Lynnaider often suggests marketplaces for beginners. Fewer rules pages to write means more time for your offer and your visitors!

Rules don’t have to be expensive

Lots of platforms have free templates for rules pages. Website builders often include cookie banners. You need very little money to start. You’d be surprised!

Use templates as a guide, change them to fit your real business, and have a lawyer check them before lots of visitors come. And no monthly rules tools before anybody knows you!

Private AND following the rules

You can keep your face out of your business and still follow every rule. Some info, like a contact address, might be required by law. But that’s very different from having to be famous!

What’s next?

The next article explains Terms and Conditions: when your platform covers you, and when you write your own. The whole lesson is in the book on our products page. Want a grown-up to help with the rules? Go to our services page.

What grown-ups usually ask (and I answer)

Why should a beginner read about rules?

Because online, one click can be a contract! Learning early saves work later.

How can there be a contract without signing?

Clicking “I accept,” or just using a site or buying, can mean you agreed.

Do I still need a lawyer?

Yes, for anything you publish as a contract. This is just the simple overview.

What does Lesson T4 cover?

Terms, privacy, data protection, cookies, copyright and trademarks, and staying safe online.

Is it the same in every country?

No! Check the rules where you live.

Where should I start?

With Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Policy. The next articles explain them.

Are there step-by-step lessons for starting each of the ten ways cheaply?

Maybe! If lots of people want them. Join the waitlist and you’ll know first.

Where can I get help if I don’t have much money?

Lynnaider shows you how to start each of the ten ways for free, or for very, very little money. You’d be surprised! And a free robot helper called Lynnaider Compass helps you step by step!
