Online Freelancing for Beginners: What It Is and Who It Suits
Would you like to read this article told by Lynnie, our fictional kid character? Jump here.
After meeting five online freelancing examples, this article explains what online freelancing is and who it suits.
Freelancing is the third of Lynnaider’s ten online income techniques, and for many people the most familiar one. You sell what you already know how to do. In this article, we explain online freelancing in simple words: what it is, who it suits, and whether you can do it while staying private.
What is online freelancing?
Lynnaider’s definition: offering your skills and time online, as a service. Freelancers work independently on a project-by-project basis. They deliver custom work to clients who pay for their expertise.
Online freelancing: the step between employment and entrepreneurship
Freelancing is often described as the step between employment and entrepreneurship.54 You manage your own time, like an entrepreneur. At the same time, you deliver work for clients in a way that can feel close to having an employer.
It also shares something important with employment that most other techniques do not. Clients tend to want to know who they are working with. Along with sponsorships, freelancing is one of the techniques where personal visibility is most naturally expected, and it is worth saying that upfront.
Online freelancing compared with employment
Like an employee, a freelancer delivers work that someone else defines and pays for. Unlike an employee, a freelancer chooses the clients, sets the prices and decides when to work. There is no fixed salary, no paid holidays and no employer handling taxes or insurance.
This freedom is what attracts many people. It also means you carry the full responsibility for finding work and organizing your business.
Can you freelance without showing your face?
Yes, you can. You can communicate only your business and your work. Just be aware that showing your face, as in employment, is the typical way freelancing is practiced.
We included freelancing in our top ten regardless, for a personal reason. Lynnaider’s logo was created by a faceless freelancer on Fiverr. His work was so creative and of such high quality that we did not think twice about looking for someone else, let alone someone with a profile picture.
What online freelancing involves
Freelancing means offering your expertise, services and sometimes simply your time to clients, project by project.55 It sits between two major types of work. You are not employed, so you manage your own time, but you still work on tasks defined by your clients.
Freelancers work independently and are usually hired for short-term tasks without long-term commitments. They can offer a wide range of services. They might take on design projects, give consulting advice, create looks or styles for clients, or produce personalized meditation videos if that is their expertise.
How marketplaces made online freelancing accessible
What has made this technique far more accessible over the last decade is the rise of dedicated platforms such as Fiverr.56 They made it much easier for freelancers to connect with potential clients and find project-based work. Upwork and Freelancer are other well-known examples.
These platforms work as marketplaces. Demand comes from businesses or individuals registered on the site who need experts to complete tasks. Supply comes from people like you, who can complete those tasks with their knowledge and skills.
Of course, you can also freelance on your own online platforms, outside of these marketplaces. A website or a social store can both work, as we explain in our article on where to find freelance clients.
Who online freelancing suits
Freelancing suits people who already have a skill others need. That might come from your job, your studies, a hobby or your life experience. If people regularly ask you for help with something, that may be your freelance service.
It also suits people who want to start earning without creating a product or holding stock. You can begin with nothing more than a profile and a clear offer. That makes it one of the quickest techniques to start.
It suits people less who want income that grows without their time. As a freelancer, you are paid for your work and time, so your income is limited by your hours. Many freelancers later add a second technique, such as a digital product, to grow beyond that.
Online freelancing and AI
AI tools are changing freelancing quickly. Some simple tasks are now done by AI in seconds. At the same time, new demand appears for people who check, adapt and approve AI results.
Several of our online freelancing examples build their service around exactly that human check. Leo adapts AI translations to local culture, and Ana makes sure AI-generated dashboards tell the right story. Using AI yourself can also make you faster.
An example of online freelancing
Imagine a primary school teacher who loves illustrating. On weekends, she offers custom children’s book illustrations on a freelancing marketplace. Her profile shows a few sample drawings, her prices and her delivery time, but no photo of herself.
Her first client is a self-publishing author who found her through the marketplace search. After the project, the author leaves a positive review, which helps the next client find her. Within a few months, she has a small but steady side income.
Starting online freelancing on a small budget
Many freelancing marketplaces are free to join and only take a fee when you earn. We recommend spending no more than about 20 dollars on your setup, with no monthly fees before you have clients. You can bring traffic to your profile yourself, without an agency.
If the idea of self-branding is what held you back so far, Lynnaider recaps the alternatives for you. Freelancing usually expects more visibility than other techniques, but your work can speak for you.
Online freelancing is a business
Even when you start small, freelancing is a business activity. Depending on your country, you may need to register it and declare your income. Keep a simple record of what you earn and set money aside for taxes.
Rules differ a lot between countries, so check the local requirements or ask an accountant. It is easier to start organized than to fix things later.
