Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m explaining how audience monetization works, step by step. And who pays whom!
Grown-ups call it a process flow. Four steps!
Step 1: make content that holds attention
Everything depends on this! You make content that pulls people in and keeps them there. Again and again, over time. That’s the base of everything!
Step 2: people spend time with it
If it works, people spend time with your content. They watch your videos, read your articles, and scroll your posts. They’re not buying anything!
They’re just there. And them being there is worth money! If you joined an app’s money program or an ad company, now you start earning.
Your fans look at YOU
Your fans only care about your content. They see ads from the ad company, which is really your customer. But they don’t know how it’s set up behind the scenes. That’s how it should be!
Ads should tell people about useful things, without spoiling their fun.
Step 3: the ad company shows ads
Now the other side! The ad company shows ads on your website, through your content. Your fans never deal with the ad company directly. That deal stays invisible!
Step 4: you get paid
The ad company or app pays you, based on how much attention your content brought. Usually once a month, but it depends on your program. More visitors who stay longer means more money!
Who sells what?
You’re NOT selling anything to your fans. You’re selling your fans’ attention to the ad company or app. That’s the whole secret! Our selling attention article explains more.
Where your time goes
Almost all of it goes into step 1: making content! Steps 3 and 4 happen without you. Step 2 depends on how good and regular your content is. That’s why this way is perfect for people who LOVE creating.
Over time
Money usually grows slowly. In the first months, you make content without earning. After you qualify, money often starts small, and grows as you make more content and get more fans.
And old content keeps helping, especially things people find in search! That’s why sticking with it pays off.
Check your numbers
Dashboards show views, visits and money. Look at which content earns most, and plan new topics!
Three oopsies
- Thinking ads alone make money. Without steady attention, ads earn little!
- Too many ads on a blog. Readers leave, and you earn less later.
- Posting only sometimes. Fans and apps lose interest.
A story
A creator writes detailed guides about hiking trails. Readers find them through search and Pinterest, and spend several minutes on each page. Her ad company shows outdoor gear ads next to the text.
Her readers never deal with the ad company. At the end of each month, the company pays her for the visits and time her guides brought. Happy trails!
