Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m explaining selling attention. When your content is your business, what do you REALLY sell? The answer surprises lots of grown-ups! (Our article on what you can sell online explains the four kinds of things to sell.)
You sell attention!
You don’t actually sell your content. You sell the attention it gets! Attention means people watching, reading and staying.
Advertisers want to reach that attention. The app or ad company sells it to them. And a piece of the money comes back to you!
Why it’s a service
That makes it a service, not a product. You’re not selling something made once. You keep making content that gets attention, again and again!
If you stop making content, fewer people see you, apps show you less, and the money drops too. The service is keeping attention coming, over time.
Old content counts too
Some content keeps getting attention long after you made it, especially blog posts and videos people find in search. That’s part of the service too! But even then, you usually need fresh content to keep growing.
What makes attention worth more?
You don’t control everything! The value depends on how much attention you get, where your fans live, how long they stay, and how much advertisers want to pay right now.
Attention can come from loyal fans who come back, from apps showing you to new people, or both!
Fans matter more than just views
A creator with super-interested fans in countries where people buy a lot earns WAY more per view than someone with more fans who don’t buy much. Advertisers pay more to reach people who might buy their stuff!
What that means for your work
Your job: make content people WANT to spend time with. Clear, useful or fun content that people watch or read to the end! Watch time and visit length are super important numbers. And posting regularly matters too.
Be kind with attention
People give you their attention. That’s a gift! So keep your content honest, useful or fun. No tricky titles or pictures that waste people’s time. Kind creators keep their fans longer. Good for everybody!
Three oopsies
- Tricky titles to get clicks. People leave fast, and apps notice!
- Forgetting your fans’ experience, like too many ads on a blog.
- Ignoring where your fans live. A small change can bring more valuable fans.
A story
A money-tips blogger writes step-by-step guides about saving money. Readers spend several minutes on each article, and often read two or three more! Advertisers love that.
Her ad company pays her well per visit, because her readers stay long and live where advertisers want to reach people.

What grown-ups usually ask (and I answer)
Is attention the same as followers?
No! Followers subscribed. Attention is time people actually spend.
Why do apps care how long people stay?
More time means more ads!
Can a small, loyal group earn well?
Yes, especially in valuable topics!
What’s evergreen content?
Content that stays useful for years, like guides. Little treasures!
Do tricky titles earn more?
Not for long. People leave fast.
What do I offer?
Your fans’ attention, again and again.
Why a service?
Because you keep making content. Stop, and the money stops.
Who buys the attention?
Advertisers, through apps or ad companies.
What makes it worth more?
How much attention, where fans live, and how long they stay.
Am I fully in control?
Not totally. The market decides the value.
Does attention only come from followers?
No! Apps show you to new people too.
Is my content the product?
It’s the magnet. The attention is what’s worth money!
Will there be step-by-step lessons for each of the ten ways?
Maybe! If lots of people want them. Join the waitlist and you’ll know first.
