Step by Step! How an Online Shop Works

Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m telling you how an online shop works, step by step!

Knowing the steps helps you see where your time will go. Lynnaider draws each way to earn as a simple “process flow.” That’s a path showing every step, from making the product to getting paid. An online shop has two routes!

Two things that never stop

Whatever route you pick, two things always happen:

  1. You make, put together, or find your products. Again and again! That’s your stock.
  2. At the same time, you bring visitors. Grown-ups call that getting “eyeballs.” Funny word! It means people’s attention. You do it with short videos, pins, search or ads.

These two never stop!

Route A: You do it yourself!

You run your own shop and send orders from your own stock. Your shop can be a website, a marketplace like Etsy, or a social store with payment links. You’re in charge of everything!

The steps

  • A customer orders. They saw your stuff and bought it!
  • You ship the order. You pack it and send it.
  • You help the customer. You answer every question yourself.

Made to order? Some products get made only AFTER someone buys them, like personalized gifts. That means no leftover stock! But it takes longer to arrive, so tell customers clearly.

Who Route A fits

Most beginners start here! It needs no partner and very little money. You keep more of each sale, and you get to know your customers.

But packing, shipping and answering every message can get to be a LOT when orders grow. That’s usually the moment to look at Route B.

Route B: With a helper!

Route B usually comes later, when lots of people want to buy. You work with a fulfillment partner. That can be a big company like Amazon, or a smaller warehouse.

The steps

  • You make or find your products, just like Route A.
  • You send a big box of stock to the partner, instead of shipping each order yourself.
  • Visitors go to the partner’s marketplace, or to your own shop connected to the partner.
  • A customer buys.
  • The partner packs and ships it!
  • The partner often answers questions about delivery and returns. Questions about the product itself usually come back to you.
  • The partner pays you, usually the price minus their fee.

Which route for you?

Start with Route A, unless lots of people already want your product. It costs little and teaches you what customers like. When packing every order takes too much time, try Route B for your best sellers.

You can even do both! Caesar, the desk friend, sells on his own website AND through Amazon.

A strong base

An Own Online Shop can carry other ways to earn on top, like affiliate links or a digital guide!

Small and private

Route A can start almost for free, with a social store and payment links. You’d be surprised how little you need! No monthly payments before you have visitors. And you can bring visitors yourself, with the traffic methods for beginners.

And no face needed. Just show the products!

What’s next?

The next article explains WHERE to sell: your own website, a social store or a marketplace. The whole module is in the book on our products page. Want a grown-up to help map out your shop? Go to our services page.
