Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m telling you about ChatGPT ads for small businesses. The practical side!

AI ads are brand new and still changing. So the smartest way is a small, careful test!

What you need

For ChatGPT shopping ads: your product list, connected through Shopify or something that works with it. Then ChatGPT makes the ad spots from your products automatically. No designing a separate ad!

For Google AI Mode: your normal Google Ads account and ads are enough. Sponsored results show up next to AI answers through the same system you might already use for search ads.

Product titles matter MORE than ever!

AI ads match your product to the question someone asks. So a clear product title and description matter even more than picking keywords!

  • “Planter 02”? The AI has nothing to work with.
  • “Handmade Ceramic Planter, Small, for Balcony and Windowsill”? Now the AI knows exactly when to show it!

Clear descriptions help the AI AND the shopper. And SEO and GEO too!

Beginner’s tip: it’s a test!

Treat it as a test for now. Start with a small budget, on one platform. ChatGPT if you’re on Shopify. Google Ads if you already run search ads.

Compare it with your search ads before you spend more. Things change super fast here!

A four-week test plan

  • Week 1: Make the titles and descriptions of your test products better.
  • Week 2: Start a small campaign on one platform, with a daily budget you’d be okay losing.
  • Weeks 3 and 4: Let it run without big changes. Write down clicks, costs and sales.
  • End of week 4: Compare with your other ways, and decide whether to keep going.

Check your country first

Right now, AI ads aren’t in every country yet. The platforms are adding countries step by step. So before you spend time or money, check if it works where your customers live!

Oopsies

  1. Testing with products that have weak titles. The AI can’t match them well.
  2. Spending lots because it’s new and exciting.
  3. Changing everything after a few days, before the platform has time to learn.
  4. Forgetting to check if it’s available, and the ad rules, in your customers’ countries. (Remember selling internationally?)

An example

A small Shopify shop sells linen kitchen towels. The owner rewrites ten product titles to be really clear, connects the product list, and sets a small daily budget.

After four weeks: fewer clicks than search ads, but more buyers! So the owner keeps the small test going. No big risk, real learning!

Who is it good for?

Shopping ads fit product businesses among the ten ways to earn, like online shops or print-on-demand through Shopify. Other ways can try Google’s AI spots through Google Ads.

Small budget

Free ways stay your foundation. AI ads are an extra test, once your products already sell. And they show products, not faces!

What’s next?

That’s all fourteen ways to bring visitors! The next article explains another way to sort them: finding new people vs keeping the ones you have. The whole lesson is in the book on our products page. Want a grown-up to help plan a test? Go to our services page.
