LYNNIE VERSION

Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m telling you how to earn from things you own. What do you REALLY offer? It sounds easy, but there’s a secret part! (Our article on what you can sell online explains the four kinds of things to sell.)
The thing
What you offer is a real thing. Something you let other people use. Grown-ups split it into two words:
- Property: bigger, more valuable things, like apartments or cars.
- Assets: things like tools, furniture or clothes.
That’s mostly about size and value. The business works the same way!
The secret part: a service on top
Almost always, there’s also a real-life service on top! Without it, the thing couldn’t reach the person, or be used well.
For property
For a room or a car, the service is getting it ready, letting people in, and keeping it nice.
For reselling
For things you sell and ship, the service is packing, sending and making sure it arrives. For big things like furniture, it might be arranging a pickup.
For renting
For rentals, the service is handing it over, explaining how it works, taking it back and checking it. Plus cleaning and little fixes between rentals!
Why the service matters so much
The money doesn’t only come from the thing. It also comes from how well you do the service! Two exact same cameras can earn really differently, depending on their owners.
People remember a clean car, a carefully packed box, or a helpful instruction card. Those memories become reviews. And reviews decide how easily people find you on most platforms!
Make your service shine
- Keep things clean and in good shape.
- Add a short instruction card when needed.
- Offer handy extras, like chargers or a carry bag.
- Pack carefully, and send tracking info.
- Answer every message fast and kindly.
Vicky from our sharing economy examples adds beginner instructions and memory cards to her camera. Little touches make you special!
And write your service in your listing! Like “I deliver in the city” or “comes with a carry bag.” People compare listings super fast, and a clear promise can win.
What to offer?
Good things to rent are things people need sometimes, but don’t want to buy. Tools, cameras, camping gear or party stuff! For reselling, clothes, furniture and electronics in good shape sell well.
Think about value, demand and how much work the service is. A heavy thing that needs delivering for a tiny price? Maybe not worth it. A light, valuable thing lots of people want? Often yes!
Three oopsies
- Only thinking about the thing, and forgetting the service. A great thing with a bad handover gets bad reviews!
- Forgetting how long cleaning or packing takes.
- Making a thing sound better than it is. Honest wins!
A story
Someone rents out a really good baby stroller to families visiting a tourist city. The stroller is the thing. The service is cleaning it, bringing it to the family’s hotel, and picking it up at the end.
Families love not bringing their own! And the delivery means the owner can charge more. Wheee!
