Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m telling you about personalized digital products. Personalized means made just for one person!

With digital products, what you sell is pretty simple. But there’s one special case that surprises lots of beginners!

What you offer

With digital products, you sell a digital product. It comes in two kinds:

  • Knowledge in a file, like an e-book, a simple PDF, or a recorded online course.
  • Digital art, like a big, sharp photo, a drawing, an animation, or a design template.

Either way, you deliver a finished file that’s the SAME for every buyer.

What’s a personalized one?

Now imagine a customer asks you to add their name to your creation. You change the file, and send them their very own version! It’s still a digital file.

But Lynnaider says it’s really more like freelancing. You’re also giving a digital service! You listened to one customer’s wish, it took extra time, and you made something just for them.

That’s called personalization. Because it’s a special service, you can ask for an extra fee!

Examples

  • A printable family tree with the customer’s family names.
  • A digital wedding invitation with the couple’s names and date.
  • A drawing of a customer’s pet.
  • A budget template with the customer’s own categories.
  • A children’s story where the child is the hero!

Why it matters

A normal digital product is made once, and sold lots of times without extra work. A personalized one needs your time for EVERY order!

You collect details, check them, and make changes. Those are freelancing jobs! How freelancing works explains them.

Doing both

If you like this kind of editing, do both! Lots of sellers offer a normal product at a lower price, and a personalized one at a higher price. The normal one sells lots, and the personalized one earns more per order.

Just watch your time!

An example

Imagine an artist who sells printable baby room posters with animals. Her normal posters download instantly, for a small price. She also offers a personalized version with the baby’s name and birthday, for twice the price, delivered within two days.

Most customers buy the normal posters, which earn without extra work. The personalized ones take her about 20 minutes each, and people LOVE them as gifts!

When to offer it

Personalized versions make sense when customers keep asking for little changes, like a name or a date. And for gifts, where a personal touch is worth more! If several people ask for the same kind of change, you’ve found something people want.

Want to sell lots with little work? Offer a few ready-made versions instead, like the same poster in three colors!

Oopsies

  1. Same price for normal and personalized. Your extra time deserves extra pay!
  2. Promising instant delivery for something you still have to make.
  3. Messy details. Use a simple form at checkout, so you get every name and date right the first time!

Small and private

Selling digital products can start with almost no money. You’d be surprised! No monthly payments before anyone knows your product. And no face needed!
