SEO for Beginners: How to Get Found on Google After the 2026 AI Search Change

This is the first method in our list of the fourteen traffic methods for beginners: search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization, usually called SEO, is the first traffic method on our list and one of the most valuable for any online business. SEO for beginners can sound technical, but the basics are simple and most website builders already support them. In this article we explain how SEO works, what changed with Google’s AI Mode in 2026, and the numbers to watch.

Method 1: SEO for beginners, an organic and free method

SEO means making it easy for search engines, primarily Google, to find, understand and rank your website when someone searches for something relevant to what you offer. Done well, it can bring consistent traffic for months or years from a single piece of content. It requires no ongoing ad spend.

The core elements of SEO for beginners

The core elements are simple to list. First, keywords used naturally in your page titles, headings and body text. Keywords are the words people type when they search. Second, a well-structured website that loads quickly and works on mobile phones. Third, content that is genuinely useful and credible.

Most website builders, such as Shopify, WordPress and Wix, include basic SEO settings you can manage without technical knowledge. Backlinks, which are links from other websites to your content, remain a useful trust signal. Their relative weight is changing as search evolves.

Important: what changed in May 2026

Google announced the biggest change to Search in more than 25 years. AI Mode, powered by Gemini, now places AI-generated answers at the very top of search results, before any traditional links appear. AI Overviews, short AI summaries, appear on nearly half of all Google searches.

Click-through rates for the top organic result have dropped to about half on searches where AI features appear. More than half of all US Google searches now end without anyone clicking a link.

What this means for SEO for beginners

This does not make SEO irrelevant, and the rules may change again. It does change what success looks like from now on. Being cited inside an AI Overview now brings significantly more clicks than a traditional top-ranking position.

The new goal is to be the source the AI quotes, not just the link below it. A related traffic method, generative engine optimization (GEO), focuses exactly on this, and we explain it in its own article on generative engine optimization.

What content SEO requires

For SEO, your website itself is the content. Every page title, heading, image label and body paragraph is a chance to show search engines what your page is about. Prioritize structure and accuracy: short paragraphs, factual content and clear headings.

Images, Google Lens and Google Shopping

With Google Lens and Google Shopping, the content goes further. Product images can appear directly in Google search results. Make sure your images are good quality and that their file names are correct and descriptive, for example “handmade-blue-ceramic-mug.jpg” instead of “IMG_1234.jpg”. These are very important SEO assets.

Beginner’s tip for SEO

Start with the basics your platform already supports: page titles, meta descriptions and image alt text. A meta description is the short summary shown under your page in search results. Alt text is a short description of an image, used by search engines and screen readers.

These are the most overlooked starting points, and also the ones with the most immediate impact. You can fill them in yourself today, without any agency or paid tool.

Key numbers to watch in SEO

MetricWhat it means
Organic traffic volumeHow many visitors arrive through search. The main measure of SEO success over time.
Keyword ranking positionsWhere your pages appear in results for specific search terms. Shows whether your optimization is moving in the right direction.
CTR from search resultsClick-through rate: the percentage of people who see your page in results and click through.
Pinterest outbound clicksActual traffic sent from Pinterest to your website. The most important Pinterest number.
Pinterest monthly impressionsHow many times your pins were seen on Pinterest. Can be included in a media kit when pitching brand partnerships.

The last two rows relate to Pinterest, which also works as a visual search engine. The next article explains this visual side of search in more detail.

A simple SEO routine for beginners

Start with your most important pages: your homepage and your main product or service page. For each, choose one main keyword that describes what people would search for. Use it naturally in the page title, the first paragraph and at least one heading.

Then write a clear meta description that tells searchers what they will find. Add descriptive alt text to every image. Finally, publish one helpful article per week or every two weeks that answers a real question your customers ask.

After a few months, check which pages bring visitors and which searches they come from, using a free tool such as Google Search Console. Improve the pages that are close to the top, and write more about the topics that work.

SEO for beginners on a small budget

SEO is one of the most budget-friendly traffic methods. You did not need to spend more than about 20 dollars on your setup, and SEO itself costs nothing but time. Free tools such as Google Search Console show you which searches bring visitors to your site.

Be patient. SEO often takes weeks or months before it brings steady visitors. Once it does, it can keep working for a long time, often without any further work on that page.

SEO for beginners who stay private

SEO is ideal for people who prefer not to show their face. Search engines rank helpful content, not personalities. If the idea of self-branding is what held you back so far, Lynnaider recaps the alternatives for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is SEO?

SEO, search engine optimization, means making it easy for search engines, mainly Google, to find, understand and rank your website when someone searches for something related to what you offer.

Is SEO free?

It costs no ad money. It does take time and effort, but a single good page can bring visitors for months or years with no ongoing spend.

Do I need technical knowledge for SEO?

No. Most website builders, such as Shopify, WordPress and Wix, include basic SEO settings you can manage without technical knowledge, like page titles, meta descriptions and image alt text.

What changed in Google Search in 2026?

Google introduced AI Mode, powered by Gemini, which places AI-generated answers at the top of results before traditional links. Fewer people click links on searches where AI answers appear, so being quoted in the AI answer has become very valuable.
