This article follows our introduction to the Via Ferrata and walks you through each of its five stages.
Every online business goes through the same five stages, whatever the business model. Knowing the stages of starting an online business helps you plan your time, avoid common mistakes and see where you are at any moment. In this article we explain each stage of the Lynnaider Via Ferrata, and why the last one stays with you for good.
Stage 1 (T1): Potential & Purpose
The Via Ferrata does not ask you to know your final purpose or business idea at the start. Think of this first stage as “Reflection in Action.” You begin with your means: who you currently are and what you currently have.
Who you are includes your identity, your values and your energy. What you have includes your tools, your access, your skills, your lived experience and possibly your network. These are the starting materials for your business.
Through small, low-risk actions, potential becomes visible and purpose becomes clearer. Identity and tools influence action, and action reshapes your identity and your tools. This key stage of the Lynnaider framework is grounded in the effectuation theory of Sarasvathy9, the entrepreneurship theory that Lynnaider’s research found most relevant to apply.
What effectuation means in practice
Effectuation describes how many experienced entrepreneurs actually start. Instead of planning everything in advance, they begin with what they have and take small steps they can afford. Each step teaches them something and shapes the next one.
For a beginner, this is reassuring. You do not need a perfect idea or a detailed business plan to begin. You need a first small action, and the willingness to learn from it.
Stage 2 (T2): Offering & Income
In the second stage, you get familiar with the income techniques and decide what type of offering you could develop. At first, your offering might be exchanged for payment, or simply for attention. Both are valuable at the beginning.
We talk about four categories of offering that apply to all business models: physical product, digital product, physical service and digital service. Lynnaider regrouped offerings into this structure to make them simple to understand. Every online business delivers one of these four, or a combination.
Stage 3 (T3): Profile & Setup
The third stage is the most technical one. Profile types are grouped into three categories: marketplace profile, social media profile and website. Everyone must start with one of them.
In this stage we also talk about income-enabling software, grouped into five distinct categories. These are the additional setup steps that let your business take orders, receive payments and deliver. You will only need the ones that match your chosen technique.
Setup is also where many beginners overspend. When you are starting out, you do not need to spend more than about 20 dollars. Free routes and small one-time fees exist for most techniques, so you can perfect your setup later, once traffic arrives.
Stage 4 (T4): Legal & Safety
In consultation with our legal and physician network, we summarized the key aspects of the relevant law and of personal mental safety. These are the steps we applied ourselves when starting. This stage is intended to remove at least some of the worry.
You will learn how to operate a business legally and correctly, protecting yourself and the people around you. Topics include terms and conditions, privacy policies, data protection and cookies. We also cover the personal side of safety, such as your digital footprint and how to handle judgment online.
Stage 5 (T5): Traffic & Content
“If they don’t see it, they won’t buy into it.” This is the stage where you decide how to attract attention to your offer. Yes, this is the marketing stage, and without it even the best ideas remain invisible.
This is the stage you will keep repeating, even after you have reached the top of the mountain. You do not need to be in the spotlight yourself, but your offer certainly does. If the idea of self-branding is what held you back so far, Lynnaider recaps the alternatives for you.
The good news is that marketing can be learned and done by the business owner today. You no longer need to pay an agency to bring visitors to your offer. There are many ways to drive traffic, and we explain them simply in Lesson T5.
Why traffic matters so much among the stages of starting an online business
To emphasize how important it is to keep practicing this fifth stage, we use a metaphor. Without traffic, all the stages before it are unfortunately pointless.
“Even the most precious stream remains unnoticed by the passerby if its sound cannot be heard through the forest.”
Your offer can be excellent, your setup can be clean and your legal pages can be perfect. If no one hears about your business, no one can buy from it.
A quick example of the stages of starting an online business
Let us follow one person through the stages. Anna works in an office and loves organizing. In stage one, she notices that friends often ask her for help planning their weeks, and that she enjoys it.
In stage two, she decides her offering will be a digital product: a set of printable weekly planners. In stage three, she opens a free shop on a marketplace for digital downloads. In stage four, she checks the marketplace’s seller rules and sets up a simple way to keep her earnings separate.
In stage five, she starts sharing pins of her planners and short tips about weekly planning. Her first sale arrives a few weeks later. Her total setup cost stays under 20 dollars, and she never shows her face online.
Anna’s story is simple on purpose. It shows that the stages of starting an online business are manageable when you take them one at a time.
How the stages of starting an online business fit together
The first four stages are mostly done once, then adjusted as your business grows. The fifth stage is ongoing. Many entrepreneurs spend most of their weekly time on traffic once the first four stages are in place.
You can also revisit any stage at any time. Your purpose may become clearer after your first sales. Your offering may change when you learn what customers really want.
Some entrepreneurs even start with the fifth stage. Content creators often build an audience first, and their offer grows out of that audience later. Both orders are valid.

Frequently asked questions
What are the five theory stages?
Potential and Purpose (T1), Offering and Income (T2), Profile and Setup (T3), Legal and Safety (T4), and Traffic and Content (T5). Each addresses one of the key questions a solo entrepreneur asks along the way.
Why does the Via Ferrata start with Potential rather than an idea?
Because the framework does not ask you to have a final business idea on day one. You start from what you already are and what you already have. Purpose becomes clearer through action, not before it.
What does T2 Offering and Income cover?
The four categories of offering: physical product, digital product, physical service, and digital service. Every online business fits into one of these or a combination.
What is T3 Profile and Setup about?
It is the most technical stage. You choose one of three profile types (marketplace, social media, website) and set up the income-enabling software you actually need to operate.
Why is T5 Traffic never really finished?
Because attracting attention to your offer is the step you keep repeating, even after you have reached the top of the mountain. Without it, even the strongest offer stays invisible.
Do I have to complete all five stages before I begin selling?
No. They are stages of thinking, not gates. You revisit each one as your situation evolves. The point is to know they exist and to weave them into your routine.
Where can I get step-by-step help to start online on a small budget?
