Hi! I’m Lynnie! Today I’m explaining the sharing economy for beginners.
Most ways to earn ask you to make something new. The sharing economy starts with stuff you ALREADY have! Let’s see how.
What Lynnaider means
Sharing or reselling your real things online. Instead of making something new, you earn from what you own. You rent it out, lend it for a little money, or sell it to someone else.
What it is
People share their things through apps, usually for a little money, and do a little service each time. Famous examples are ride-sharing like Uber, room-sharing like Airbnb, and websites for sharing tools, parking spots or services.
The big idea: things that sit around unused can be useful to someone! Got a spare room, or a car you hardly drive? Somebody might need it sometimes.
Why it works
The platforms connect people who have stuff with people who need stuff. They handle the paying part, and often add safety things like ratings, insurance or help. That makes sharing with strangers way safer and easier than before!
And you don’t need lots of money to start!
Reselling: the other side
Reselling goes one step further. You pass on things you don’t need anymore, like nice clothes, furniture or working electronics, so somebody else can use them.
That’s why Lynnaider puts reselling in the sharing economy too. Platforms like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Vinted and Vestiaire Collective make it easy to list, sell and ship.
And it’s good for the planet! Less trash, and nothing new needs to be made.
Why it’s easy to start
This is one of the easiest ways Lynnaider teaches! You already own the stuff, so setting up is simple. Your main job is your page on the big mall you pick.
Your own rental website would be WAY harder, and need ads to find people nearby.
Who is it for?
People who own useful things they rarely use. People who love finding, caring for, or fixing up things. And people who want to start earning online with almost no money. Lots of people try this first, before other ways!
But your earnings depend on what you own.
Staying safe
Sharing with strangers can feel scary. Platforms help with ID checks, reviews, deposits and sometimes insurance. Use them, and read the rules about damage and canceling.
For handovers in person, meet somewhere safe. Check the thing together when you hand it over AND when it comes back. A few photos each time help if anybody disagrees later!
A story
A family has a camping tent they use once a year. They put it on a local rental platform for summer weekends. It gets rented eight times in one season! That pays for new sleeping bags for everyone.
In autumn, they sell the kids’ too-small bikes on a used-stuff mall. Both are the sharing economy!
What’s next?
